Which of Barenboim’s Beethoven piano sonata cycles is better?
Barenboim is on of my favorite pianist, and Beethoven (especially his piano sonatas) is one of my favorite composers, so I decided to by the entire sonata cycle played by Beethoven. When I searched Amazon he recorded it (for CD) twice – once for EMI and once for Deutche Grammophon. Which is the better? Why?
The task is to evaluate the Barenboim renditions and advise on which one is better. So it doesn’t matter if we prefer Brendel or Arrau or Pollini or Benedetti-Michelangeli etc. and I won’t say my preferences.
Now, there are two complete Beethoven recordings by D.B., both in the 90’s, the first one with EMI, the second one with Deutsche. To make things more complex, there is a DVD by Emi of a Masterclass D.B. held in Berlin in mid 2005, covering if I remember correctly all 32 sonatas.
There is a peculiar way to play the piano for a conductor: he stoves all his harmonical vision into the keyboard, and if there ever was a real conductor-pianist, that’s Daniel. I had the chance to hear him live as a pianist in various repertoires, as a conductor spanning from Mozart to Boulez, and as both in Beethoven’s concertos. His benchmark sonata is to me n. 17 ‘Tempest’: at the very middle of the cycle, moving from classic to romantic, it’s the point where the advancement, the deepening into the musical texture appear. And in the last sonatas, 30, 31, 32 also, the most visionary, he appears somehow more in control of the impressive material at hand, in the latest edition. Go for the Deutsche.
My recommendation is to listen to him in the Diabellis too. Whatever the judgment, Barenboim is a one-in-a-century musical personality. I was at his Tristan at La Scala and listened to his interviews: he does know his music. And when his left shoe opened up he continued to conduct barefoot.
