What is a good way to learn the structure of music?
I’ve never had a private music lesson in my life. I play piano, though not that well. I got interested in music from the video game series Final Fantasy. I checked out a book from the library and learned mainly that way. After reading the book, I sort of taught myself music theory and structure, even though I couldn’t identify it at the time. I started to learn the different chords and scales, but even then I couldn’t really identify what I was doing, so I looked up some of this online. I suppose now I know more about music than the average person.
Anyways, I want to improve my ability. Obviously I can look up things online, but I’m more of a learn by doing type of person. I know how to read sheet music and have a little bit of relative pitch. I thought about composing my own music too, though not professionally. I figured the best way to learn is to look at sheet music, examine how it’s put together, and draw my own style from what I learned.
