What are some Piano Trio pieces I can listen to and study?
I’m writing a piano trio. Could anyone guide me to some piano trio pieces that I could study? If you can give the full name and the name of the composer that would be great!
Have a listen to a few different trios from across the years, and notice the way the various composers wrote for the instruments developed over time. Haydn’s early trios were essentially sonatas for piano with violin and cello accompaniment, where the cello basically reinforces the piano’s bass line. From this, evolved the piano trios we know today, in which all the instruments are fully integrated and the parts are of equal importance.
I’d start, perhaps with Haydn’s « Gypsy Rondo » Trio (Hob. XV 25) and maybe one or two of his others. Compare this with Beethoven – the « Ghost » Trio or the « Archduke » – they are quite different from Haydn. Then move on to the romatic era. Mendelssohn’s two trios are good examples and the trios by Smetana, Dvorak, Arensky and Tchaikovsky. Moving on to more recent times, have a listen to Ravel’s Trio, Shostakovich’s 2nd Trio, and the Piano Trio by Charles Ives – all great works.
