What are excellent trio jazz albums/acts?
I’m a big fan of ahmad jamal, bill evans, oscar peterson, monty alexander, etc… I’m in my 20s and I’m kind of new to the whole jazz piano thing so I have to work my way from the old and popular to the more unknown (but equally good sounding) jazz. It has to be there because this exists in all genres-music industry politics type of thing. I don’t only listen to trios obviously, but I’m particularly fond of them (piano, bass, drums). Can anyone recommend any trios that I might like, especially given that I love those 4 already named acts? They don’t have to be old school. They can be modern/young. It would also be cool if you know of any trios from other parts of the world or trios with female pianists. Thanks.
Brad Mehldau – lots of good trio work.
David Braid – I do not know if he has trio albums, but DMBQ is a great record. The other preformers are fantastic as well. They are all from Canada. Anything with Braid on it will not disappoint you.
Kieth Jarrett – Standards Trio, ‘nuf said
Mark Eisenman – A heavy jazz pianist from Canada as well.
Herbie Hancock has some good trio work, trio (’77) is amongst my favorite.
