What is the best way to improve sight reading piano?
I am 17 years old and I really want to improve on my sight reading piano. I cant sight read anything right off a paper but I know how to slowly and i would have to work on it for a while. My sight reading level is the Alfreds adult course level 2, so not where i should be which is why i want to improve as fast as possible because i want to go to college for it. So i know my notes and rythems and stuff and ik how to practice on a piece until i finish it but as far as sight reading, how would i practice that? Would I practice peices on my level and just sight read through them and gradually get harder and harder? Should i work on stuff thats above my level? I mean i do practice a lot and every day but im not sure if my practicing is helping my sight reading. So i want to know what is the best way i should practice thats most benificial for my sight reading.

Take a piece of music away from the piano, sit down with it and say the names of the tones to yourself as you look at it. Get your mind acclimated with where each letter name appears on the staff. After you can automatically name the note on the staff without hesitation work on counting note values along with the note name. If you have a « C » that is a whole note say to yourself on the down beat C then count out the remaining beats. i.e. C 2 3 4. If you have two half notes, C and an E, say C 2 E 4. After you can do that without much hesitation try seeing in your mind the finger placement of each note on the piano. Recall what the tone sounds like. This is called visualization, it is a technic athletes utilize as part of their training. Sit in a comfortable, relaxed setting and in your mind see yourself performing flawlessly. Also, try to hear the note as you see yourself playing it. In this way you are training your mind.
