How to make piano practice more fun?
When I am playing a piece and accidentally mess up, I get really, really frustrated. What is the easiest way to practice without getting frustrated???
Slow it down.
I’ve been taking music for 6 years now (not piano) and when we get a new piece, we start off really slow, and when we’ve learned it but still have issues in some parts, we slow it down and gradually speed up. It’s all about muscle memory. Do it slow over and over, pinpoint parts you have a lot of trouble with. Once you can play them really well going slow, get faster, perfect the speed, then get faster, perfect it, and keep going until you get up to speed. Baby steps, my friend. It works. It’s also a good idea to play the entire piece going slower, to make sure it flows well…because sometimes we can get the parts we suck at, but when we start playing the whole piece, and they come up, it’s like wtf. I can’t play this. If you get me.
If you’re getting frustrated, take a break. Go for a walk. Stretch. Get a drink, have something to eat, cool off, and come back to it. If you’re frustrated you’re only going to keep screwing up.
