Instrumentation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations?
Why is it that even thought the Goldberg Variations are composed for the Harpsichord, they are almost always heard on the piano? Many other harpsichord pieces like the Well-Tempered Clavier might have been recorded on piano, but harpsichord versions are still common.
I am familiar with musical history. What I am asking is why I have heard many recordings of the Well-Tempered Clavier on period instruments, but never found a single recording of the Goldberg Variations.

The Harpsichord is what the Goldberg Variations were written for. It was the common keyboard instrument of the time.
Bach’s favorite keyboard instrument was the Clavichord. Also struck metal strings, it was much quieter than the harpsichord. Unlike the harpsichord, it was capable of playing a dynamic, i.e. loud – soft.
The later invention of the piano became so popular that the general taste for the harpsichord died off.
An interest in early music as played on the original instruments grew in the early nineteen-sixties.
Now, there are more specialists who play the old instruments, including whole orchestras who specialize in Renaissance or Baroque or Classical period repertoire. (Period orchestra / original instruments).
They make a unique sound which is quite a surprise to anyone only familiar with contemporary musical instruments.

and here on original period instruments, notice also the A the orchestra tunes to is almost a half-step lower that it is in modern times – another big difference to the overall sound:

P.s. There seem to be few recordings of this now available on Harpsichord. It could be due to current fashion or the economy of the Classical recording industry. There is a recording on the Archiv label, but it is part of an expensive set. That recording is the Ralph Kirkpatrick performance, if memory serves, on the Clavichord. It is wonderful.
