Will I still be able to sight read?
Im a junior in high school (17) and i play piano. The only thing is that my sight reading is horrible. A kid the same age as me sight read in my class and it was amazing. We gave him a bunch of hard pieces from Johannes Brahms, Beethoven, and Bach and he sight read all of them with no problem! It feels like hes light years ahead of me. The farthest that I can sight read is the little short simple pieces from the Alfred’s basic piano courses level one. This kid has been playing since 5th grade and i started in eighth and had a private teacher for about a year.
I do know the basics of piano though so if just keep practicing and dedicate my time to it will i be able to sight read at some point in the future??
Sight reading takes time to master. Like everything else, some people get it faster than others and that completely sucks, but you can become as advanced as the kid in your class.
Don’t let this kid make you so upset that you skip vital steps to sight reading hard pieces. You have to first master sight reading beginner pieces first. AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T RIGHT THE LETTERS IN!!!!!!!!!! You will not progress musically. My teacher allowed us to do it, but I stopped because I really wanted to be a true musician. Then I had to start playing solos because the rest of the kids in the class barely knew how to play simple pieces while I was playing harder pieces. It was so frustrating because we weren’t able to play wonderful ensembles because of them and our lazy teacher.
Anyway, when you are sight reading the beginner’s pieces, don’t just make sure that you are playing the notes right, but also pay attention to the musical direction in the song, including dynamics, slurs and ties, tempo increases and decreases, accidentals, and pedal markings for the piano. Commit to sight read 15-20 beginner pieces one at a time slowly enough to catch everything in the song, and then do it again. Then play it a 3rd time a little faster. By the time you finally get to the 15th song, you should notice that you read it easier than the first song. Then you may be able to go on to intermediate songs.
It takes time, but as you do it you’ll naturally notice certain concepts in the music that makes it easier to sight read, like the association between the time signature and where the notes fall in a bar, repetitive sections, and chords written above the lines, but it all starts by sight reading Twinkle Twinkle Little Star very slowly.
