BAD BACK PAIN – PIANISTS?

I have bad back pain when I’m playing piano for a while. I’ve have just been hired as a restaurant pianist and I am required to sit at the piano for about 2 hours during the week, and even 5 hours during the weekend. I am not going to be in good shape with my back and I was wondering what I could do to avoid this? I have a cushion bench so I can’t lean my back up against a chair (although that wouldn’t even help). Aren’t there some sort of belts I could wear for back support? I’m pretty sure truck drivers have special belts also. I’ll just need it *under* my clothes.

Your prolonged sitting posture is going to cause some issues for you. Even with the pain you are going to be required to sit upright and over time this is going to cause your back muscles to become tight and strong. You will most likely realize your back pain well after you’ve finished playing piano and even when you wake up in the morning.
In order to correct and reduce your discomfort, start stretching your back muscles before and after you play. When you first shower let the hot water hit your back while you touch your toes. If you can’t currently touch your toes keep trying, making it a goal to reach them. Throughout the day take the time to keep stretching your back.
Sitting on a bench for that long will also shorten the muscles in your thighs. Find some yoga stretches that you are comfortable with and keep your muscles in balance. You will be sore when first starting out but if you keep your muscles loose and moving properly you will grow into your role and be producing beautiful music without a painful look!
