How to clean musical instrument keys?
I have an oboe that I’ve had for about 10 years now and it is starting to build up some kind of corrosion or rust on the keys. They are dark spots on the silver itself.
I’m wanting to disassemble and clean my instrument, but am cautious as to what I should clean it with. Should I just use water or should I buy some type of cleaning solution for it? Are there any usable household solutions as well, like baking soda for example?
I am wanting to restore the shininess that it used to have previously when I first bought it.
Any help is much appreciated.
Found the following on a flute site, but it’s applicable for any intrument with silver-plated parts:
« Clean finger prints from the surface of plated instruments after use, using a lint-free soft cloth or polishing cloth.
Perspiration acids found in finger prints can cause plating to tarnish and eventually peel off. In severe cases, these acids cause heavy tarnishing and severe corrosion of the mechanism. To remove tarnishing, use a silver cloth, carefully. Never use liquid metal polish. »
