Bassists…help a beginner out?
So, I’m self-taught as of now b/c I can’t afford a teacher. I bought a Hal-Leonard book but am almost done with it. Btw, I’m 16 years old and my primary instrument is piano, but I’ve been learning bass for about 6 mos now. So far, root notes are easy and I use them a lot. But how do I add more notes? Do I just play different notes w/in the same chord? For example, if it’s a C chord, can I use C, E, and G? Sorry if I sound stupid, I just need some direction here. Thanks in advance!!! ~Indie G
It all depends on what type of music you’re playing and how much movement, dissonance or tension you want to create.
For a no frills bassline you can use root + fifth (for a C chord C + G).
A common blues/rock bassline uses a pentatonic scale which is root, third (M or m), fourth, fifth, minor seventh (C, E(b), F, G, Bb for C major, minor or 7).
For a busier bassline branch out into the rest of the scale (C major chord = C major scale). Thirds, fourths and fifths (E, F, G in C major) generally sound pleasant, while seconds, sixths and sevenths (D, A, B) carry more tension.
Play around and experiment with notes to see how different notes sound in different places.
