Piano Book – Need Suggestions!?
I need help with finding a piano book right for me. My birthday is tomorrow (yay me!) and so I thought about trying to learn the piano by myself. I have a synthesizer at home. It only has about 49 keys (20 black keys and 29 white keys). I do not plan on getting an actual piano so I will just switch to lower octaves when needed. I am in 9th grade and will be 15 years old. I have been playing the violin at public school ever since 4th grade. In 5th grade I joined band with the trombone but quit after 7th grade.
So I know basic music and know both clefs. I’m looking for lesson books that will get me started on playing piano. I would like to learn classical music. I don’t really want to learn piano as an accompaniment but will settle for that if I must. Please give me some good suggestions. Thanks!!
Well, fortunately for you when you begin on piano you do not need a full keyboard.
I would buy a beginner method book to learn how to familiarize yourself with the piano. I was in the same position you were, just a few years older:D I played cello for many years and wanted to learn the piano as an adult. I ultimately took private lessons, but I started by learning the absolute basics from a do it yourself book. The one I used was Alfred’s basic adult piano course, but there are literally hundreds of teach yourself method books available.
After this I played Bach, and Bach, and more Bach. You could go from absolute beginner to professional pianist by only playing Bach’s music, and still not play everything he wrote for keyboard. The first two pieces of his I played were Minuet in G Minor and Minuet in G Major. Both appear in Anna Magdalenas Notebook, a selection of simple piano tunes that Bach’s wife kept on hand to entertain guests with. These also appear in the Suzuki Piano method books.
