What book should I use to improve my critical reading score?

My goal is an 800. I scored a 65 on my PSAT practice and a 640 on my SAT practice. I am currently using Princeton Review’s Cracking the SAT for the ‘big picture’

What book should I use for more specific critical reading strategies? I will be getting Barron’s 2400 either way, but I would like to use a 3rd book specific to this section.

Also, Kaplan (PSAT review which I have now ditched due to SAT prep) said I should read the passage before hand, while Princeton says not to? From past experience, which is a more effective strategy?

All of the books you listed are probably equally good options. They are fairly similar, each with certain advantages and disadvantages, and all will help roughly equally and probably no one brand is better for all people all the time. Probably the best would be anything from collegeboard.com or purchased from the college board. Be sure to take many practice tests, as you can use trial and error to find the best strategy. Familiarity with the format will foster success.

However, the best way to improve your score is to read higher level literature and periodicals. Reading works written from 1800-1950 will familiarize you with grammar patterns that aren’t used frequently anymore but are still tested on the SAT. Also, reading the Economist is a good way to expose yourself to the English language as it is not often presented. This will also vastly increase your knowledge on current world affairs.

One very successful method to improve your abilities for the sentence completion questions is use freerice.com, a vocabulary building website.

I did not use any review materials besides the official SAT practice test and the SAT questions of the day, but I still managed to get an 800 through avid reading and the use of freerice.com.
