Brahms concerto or symphony Op. ___ ?
I know there is are a tremendous amount of works that this piece of music could be by Brahms. But I had it on a disc a couple years ago and the cd broke, so I threw it out along with the case with all the titles. The problem is I need it for a story I’m writing. Anyway, it starts with a brooding beat, almost like marching and it’s very dark throughout. Any suggestions would be helpful. I’ve tried to look it up and after listening to many many of his compositions, I still can’t find it.
Nope, that’s not it, but thank you. This one is more brooding and really depressing sounding that one you suggested is much livelier and lighter.

I found it! It is not Brahms, although Brahms may have used it at one point.
It is: Piano Trio in E-flat Major, Op.100 (D.929): II. Andante con moto

Dark with a brooding beat sounds like the 1st symphony in C minor Opus 68 – the slow introduction and the following allegro. Very dark, ponderous, powerful and full of angst Failing that it could be the Concerto for Violin, Cello & Orchestra Opus 102 in A minor. My last suggestion would be the 4th Symphony Op.98, though less likely- this is passionate and full of feeling but less ponderous and march like. I’d go for the 1st Symphony. Brahms is my favourite composer- so I approve of your choice. Hope you find what you’re looking for!
