Why is my more getting lighter and more lyric when it’s supposed to get more dramatic?
I’m 19 and about to start college and, ever since junior year my voice has been getting lighter, brighter and less dramatic. when I was 17, my voice was a powerful bass-baritone with a huge, soulful sound and ringing, thick high notes (I was often mistaken for my father when answering the phone). the was things were heading, I was hoping (with substantial time of course) to be come a great Verdian dramatic baritone following in the footsteps of Leonard Warren and Nicolae Herlea. since tha time tho, my volume has decreased, my high notes are lighter and my timbre is brighter. the overall impression of the voice is more lyric/agile as opposed to thundering and dramatic. not to mention the sound wasn’t as big (although it’s still a pretty big voice, especially for 19) how could this be happening? I thought voices were supposed to get more powerful and dramatic with age. I know the voice usually gets a little higher with age, but I never expected weaker and less dramatic.
I’m thinking it could be one of two things….Either you’re singing with incorrect technique and it’s damaging your voice (do you have a singing teacher?) or you’re simply improving and finding your real voice. I’m also 19 but female, and used to believe I was a contralto for a long time. I had a range of – what I thought – was C3 to F5 at a push, and I’d sing notes flat rather than sharp, wanting to go back down in my range all the time.
I started singing lessons, and on my first lesson my teacher identified I was singing with pretty awful technique, gave me a few basic tips, suddenly my voice was completely different. Now, if I sing off-pitch, it’s almost always sharp, my range is more like E3 – C6 (and I can go up to Eb6) and apparently I have a « good soprano voice ». Funny eh? But despite the fact I have a higher voice than I thought, and when I sing properly it’s much easier to be up high than lower down, I still often try and sing with a lower tone than I should, because I’m used to doing it and singing correctly isn’t second nature to me yet. Perhaps for a while you sang with a deep voice because it’s what you thought you should be doing, and wanted to do, but now you’re improving your technique you’re finding your true voice?
Try and learn to enjoy the voice you’ve got, and don’t force it to be what it used to be as you’ll damage it that way. Just to be on the safe side, check with a singing teacher that you’re singing with correct technique and if you find you haven’t been, get your vocal folds examined by an ENT.
