help finding music I like similar to George Winston?
I really am not a classical music guy so I really know nothing about this music but recently I’ve become a big fan of George Winston, especially his song carol of the bells. since I don’t know crap bout this can someone help me find other piano solos similar tho this which I might like??
The genre is not classical. (many less helpful Y/A classical members will be happy to tell you that and nothing else.)
The genre is called ‘new-age.’ George Winston has been recording from the late 70′s or 80′s. There are many recordings by him (the original recording label was Windham Hill) and there are a fair amount of printed scores of his pieces available.
Winston’s version of Carol of the Bells is one piece from a multi-album suite of The Seasons (I believe there was one disc per season).
Winston was one of the first and still one of the best in the genre, musically and technically as a pianist. Since then, there have been many others, very few of them as good or as musically interesting. (youtube is crammed with new-age pieces played and composed by people with very little ability – go there to compare and hear the difference between good and bad in this genre!)
I suggest going to Amazon: their software for recommendations is excellent. Enter George Winston, and aside from his listings, there will be suggestions of similar music by other composers and perfomers in the genre, and suggestions, too for ‘cross-over’ genres. You can audition short bits of various tracks and see what you like. Much listed under ‘contemporary’ in this genre is just rock-a-billy country with a new age twist, which is to me far less interesting.
If it is not just piano music you are after, Have a look at Tracy Silverman, an Electric Violin player / composer.
