Why do a lot of people think the Beatles were over-rated?
There is no possible way that one could consider them over-rated…they basically wrote and re-wrote the book of pop music and changed the industy forever…12 studio albums, 27 #1 hits, it just doesn’t get any better than that and plenty of their other songs that didn’t reach #1 were 1000x better than anything that came or has come even to this day.
I dont think it’s so much that they are overrated. I think the problem, is that they are given too much credit for the development of Rock Music in comparison to their early contemporaries such as Bob Dylan and Yardbirds. By 1966-67, their initial innovation had been surpassed by Cream, Hendrix, Floyd, Doors, Country Joe & The Fish, Grateful Dead, etc. I can name at least ten albums from 1967 alone that are more innovative than Sgt Pepper. So it’s not so much overrated-ness, as it is being over-credited because of their popularity. In the big-picture, I think Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, and Jimi Hendrix had more impact on today’s music than the Beatles.
