Would the music from « Les Miserables » be considered standard vocal literature?
I am auditioning for a vocal music program and the audition criteria is to sing two standard vocal literature songs of contrasting style. I am a mezzo-soprano, but I have a 3-octave range. I have a book for sopranos that is titled « Standard Vocal Literature, » but it doesn’t show off my lower range at all. I was wondering if the song « On My Own » from Les Miserables would work..?
While « standard vocal literature » doesn’t always include songs from musicals, Les Miserables is often an exception. The music is of better quality, and the songs are great for auditions. If you wanted to do On My Own, I would say go for it. Be aware, though, that On My Own is done a lot, and it’s easy to ruin that song. I would suggest Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, if you can hold out the higher notes it makes a really beautiful song, and shows good high and low ranges.
