Does working out affect your performance at the piano?
I’ve been playing the piano for nearly eight years (I’m fourteen at the moment), and will be taking my ABRSM Grade 8 exam in two years time. What’s worrying me is the lack of stamina in my play. Even by playing a technically easy piece such as the Sonata Facile in C (as the name suggests), my arms tend to ache after two minutes of play, and hopelessly exhausted at the end. Ironically, playing the more difficult pieces like the Minute Waltz and Clair de Lune seem to have no effect on my arms, though it might be because of the less mechanical movements required of the fingers. Is it because I’ve been at the gym for P.E? My arms are clearly much bigger, but I’m afraid that it will greatly affect my performance at the piano. I wouldn’t want to break my seven distinction streak. 
Can someone give me advice? Thanks. 
From my own experience I must clearly say « no ». In my senior year I did track and field (running, warm-ups with the football team), played the French horn in marching band, and did the piano accompaniment for a friend who played the clarinet at a contest. I was 16 back then, and I can’t remember any interference there. Of course I didn’t practice 8 hrs a day and I suppose you don’t either. To me it sounds more like a personal (psychological?) issue. Perhaps you should run more tests on the relationship beween the music you choose and the strain you feel in your arms/fingers before blaming it on P.E. I may also be a good idea to ask a chiropractic for advice. I’m positive that the choice of music (Chopin/Debussy vs. (e.g.) Mannheimer Schule) makes a lot of difference depending on your real (inner) preferences.
