Is adding notes to fill empty spaces in Mozart good?
Murray Perahia does a very good job adding to some piano concertos.
Also, am I right in saying that unexpected fermatas in Mozart (score editions where Cadenzas, if not written, are separately transcribed) allow some « quasi cadenzas »?
Both Yes and a resounding No at the same time.
The practice, as advised by the composer himself, should always be done while exercising « Good Taste. » Pause on that a moment.
Mozart the composer had an unerring sense of global structure and overall proportion: this would of course include detail down to the smallest micro elements. There is every reason to believe he would reflexively adhere to that when improvising in within the context of performing his concerti.
From that I conclude any small ‘fermata cadenzas’ were proportionally very brief and not overly elaborate pianistic / musical gestures. (I believe the Beethoven cadenzas to the D minor are heavy-handed, too densely thematically developed AND overly long, killing the proportions of the movement and the entire work.)
The notion that a lot of thematic material from the pieces was included and extensively developed in any of the cadenzas I believe to be a later notion of the romantic era, where structures became larger, heavier, and rather – imho – overbuilt (to the Teutonic taste – Mozart, a Salzburg German, is still considered ‘Viennese School » as to lightness of compositional touch and rendering of style.)
Many of the brief cadenzas would have been a tasteful filip, like a calligrapher’s serif, not so much as to obscure the text or a letter of a word.
There are a few instances, especially in slow movements, where the right hand of the piano part is written with just two half notes on the first and third beats (if in 4/4), those pitches often being octaves apart. Some players fill those with a run or a kind of arpeggio-configured passage-work, ‘connecting the dots.’
Some specialists and experts, with whom I agree, believe what is on the page in those bars is exactly what was intended. Often, the sound within the texture as written produces an eloquent and declamatory gesture, rhythmically dramatic for its illusion of slowing, quite logically and strategically placed. To ‘fill’ there so interrupts the cantilena that a crux emotive-dramatic peak moment loses all its effect, destroying the architecture of the movement.. (The same occurrence in a more allegro movement may well accommodate an in-fill, but one must again consider if a logical and calculated dramatic effect is being obliterated.)
A general admonishment to improvising players of Mozart to not exceed by more than, say, the interval of a third, the range of the keyboard of the era of Mozart’s time, regardless if played on a modern piano.
Mozart, being the composer and performing pianist of these works, had no need or inclination to suddenly flair into an exhibit of disproportionate uber-pyrotechnical display: the « wow factor » being the wholly appropriate but spontaneous integral ‘fit’ of inventive material / musicianship within the context of the entire musical structure.
Mitsuko Uchida and Imogen Cunningham are two of the players whose judgment and taste I would recommend as trustworthy models for these instances. I would strongly disagree with any of them if they « connected the dots » of the aforementioned half-notes, though.
Leaving you with a revision of that spiritually egregious acronym which was endemic in the States in the 1990′s, appearing on bumper stickers and the cliche rubber bracelets worn by many:
W.W.J.D. (What would Jesus do?)
So, a simple answer would be, ask yourself, « W.W.W.D. »
